Eighty percent of modern, middle-aged men are having what is known as a midlife crisis. These men represent the highest concentration of wealth, the longest terms of unemployment and (drum roll please) the highest rate of suicide. They also represent over four million inappropriate gold stud earrings, seventeen billion individual hair transplants and eight thousand miles of hairy muffin top. These are the MIDMEN.

MIDMEN is more than just an informative self help book for a growing, if rapidly balding, generation. It's a frank - okay downright rude - collection of facts, quizzes and anecdotes that offers readers a way to identify what really matters in life and get it scheduled in.

MIDMEN keeps its readers laughing as it spoon-feeds them genuine survival information. Covering areas as diverse as health, finance, family and death, MIDMEN hilariously reinforces its reader's sense of well being as they face life's second half.

MIDMEN The Modern Man Guide to Surviving Midlife Crisis Steve Ochs 9781499781861 Books

True this: you are either a man getting ready for your midlife crisis, or a man in the midst of your midlife crisis, or a man on the other side of your midlife crisis, or a person who knows one of these men. And given this is immutable fact of living in America at this moment in time, then it follows in the funniest way that you need to read MIDMEN: The Modern Man’s Guide to Surviving Midlife Crisis. Or you know someone who does.
For the moment, forget the fact that you should read MIDMEN because it’s flat-out hilarious. Writer, actor, producer, comedian Steve Ochs is as profane and smart and hysterical as #&*! You will be thoroughly entertained from page one to page the end. Indeed, if MIDMEN were only about making you laugh aloud, then you would have to buy it now and read it now. I’m not kidding. It’s that funny.

But as clever and clear as Ochs is, MIDMEN is much more than entertaining. It is—in its special irreverent way—enlightening. Big word, I know, but it applies to MIDMEN. I mean it.

A midlife crisis is nothing to poo-poo. It’s physically, emotional, spiritually, and intellectually debilitating—at the very least, hyper challenging. And Steve Ochs has created and written a guide to surviving it. No, that’s not it. He’s gifted all men (and the women and children who tolerate them) a way to not simply survive it but to thrive through it.

There are chapters about the spouse, the kids, the world, money, and the mind that will make your eyes shoot open with recognition, if not impending doom, even while you’re laughing. Not to worry, Ochs catches you before you hit the floor and lifts you up and dusts you and tells you how to keep on keeping on. I don’t want to go into specifics because you deserve the right to crack the #&*! up on your own. But his extended bit about your body as it ages and the ensuing grooming that necessarily follows is so cringe-worthy and hilarious that, well, read it. And you will never see Da Vinci’s Vitruvian man the same way again. Never. As in not ever. Meaning never ever again.

It’s a fabulous book. Uplifting in all the right ways despite, no, because of the holy-#&*!-I’m-really-getting-old-now subject matter. Read it for yourself. Or get it for someone who should be reading it. Just get it.

MIDMEN The Modern Man Guide to Surviving Midlife Crisis Steve Ochs 9781499781861 Books Reviews

Author Steve Ochs’ MIDMEN The Modern Man's Guide to Surviving Midlife Crisis is laugh out loud funny and insightful at the same time which is a feat of great accomplishment for any writer. The fact that he put GED after his name even made me laugh. Steve is part psychologist-philosopher, stand-up comedian, researcher and kvetch.

From his Viagra story to his views on aging, manscaping, work, life and death, his fun quizzes, which I failed at miserably, and everything in-between, MIDMEN is a very fun read for any guy 40 and up. It’s also a love letter to Steve’s wife in the way his love and dedication to her comes across in the book, which I thought was very sweet.

Being a guy in my fifties and always having been into taking care of myself most of my life and in a healthy way, I related to many of Steve’s trials and tribulations and his thoughtful, and well-meaning advice. You can tell he put a lot of time and effort into this book for the reader. NOW - go out and get a copy, have yourself a few laughs and you may just learn something about yourself and improve your life in the process.
I enjoyed this book very much! It was great fun, and I frequently laughed out loud. At the same time, it is loaded with facts, substance and methodology. Steve Ochs is as irreverent as he is funny, thoughtful, and witty. The book is geared towards men, but aside from the physical properties of a “mid-male,” the psychological and philosophical thoughts and ideas contained also apply to women. This is a valuable book for those wanting some fresh perspectives, and ideas about getting older (that's "older" not "old!") or just to remember you’re not alone. An easy five stars.
How many am I allowed? Steve Ochs GED deserves at least two PhDs for Midmen, one in Psychology and one in Literature. Clearly, he did his homework for both.
Being significantly past the midlife stage myself I can attest that this book has plenty of good material for old men. I sent it to my nephew who is 36 and he wrote back gee I thought I had a few years before I had to worry about that stuff yet. But, I see much good advice for younger guys too and information (or at least ammunition) for women.
The book is full of common sense information about self care. Maybe a third PhD is due In Oriental Studies since after years of reading about guided meditation Steve finally made me understand how it works.
He's a wordsmith and first class humorist.
Let me preface this glowing review by first stating that I know Steve. Not well, thank goodness, but I do enjoy taking his money at our poker games. And it’s a testament to his gracious spirit that he gives it up so freely with nary a sideways glance or trace of disgruntled murmuring. But I digress…..just because I see him once in a while, don’t think that this is one of those ‘friend doing a friend a favor’ sort of things. God, I can’t remember the last time I did anyone a favor….and I won’t be starting now. This is my honest review of what ultimately proved to be a fun look into ‘me’. From the opening Viagra story (yes, he went there….but only once a night so I found out) to his tips on eating healthy and grooming, there are more laughs on every page than unwanted hair in my ears. It is a funny, entertaining, and quite enlightening book for those of us that are at halftime in our own private game of life. I’m actually more like at the end of the third quarter so I have experienced most, if not all, of the anecdotes and insights that pepper the book and create the non-stop chuckles and outright laughs. No matter where you are in life, this book will make it a bit more interesting, fun, and enjoyable. Buy it. Read it. Heed it. And laugh till your weak, middle-aged bladder fails you.
